We offer all the the things you’ll find at every other worthwhile hosting service provider in the world. Compare our bullet points at the right with any competitor’s. Except for some specialty items and those listed below, we match others point for point. And none of ours are optional or extra-cost.
And many competitors don’t even offer things like our 47 Ready-to-Run Web Applications, or if they do, it’s a handful of lame junk most people would be embarassed to use.
Lightly-loaded server
We like our web sites fast. We hope you do too. While our server is capable of handling as many as 1,500 web sites, we’ve chosen to give it an easy life and limit this to 300. The result is that every site serves up fast. What happens when we reach 300? We’ll simply lease a second server.
Here’s something no other hosting provider will show you. Here’s our CPU utilization report for June and early July 2005. You’ll see that even during our nightly statistics and backup runs, our server loafs along with plenty of reserve capacity. Here’s our bandwidth utilization report for the same period. (The bandwidth peaks are when we download the weekly full server backup.)
Uptime reliability
We don’t have to make claims about our server’s reliability. We offer proof, right here, in public, provided by a third-party.
The five outages reported for 2004 correspond to scheduled server upgrades. Security patches, bug fixes and software upgrades are an important part of keeping the server in tip-top shape. That’s worth an hour of downtime every now and again.
Tech support
Our tech support starts with something few others offer. Our 89 online Flash tutorial movies don’t just tell you how, they show you how to do everything from setting up your email to installing programs on the server.
We also support our hosting clients directly by email and telephone. The tech support phone number is our mobile phone. You talk directly with the owner. We do not hide behind a corporate switchboard or some automated system of voice-mail jail.

Application Support
While we’re ready, willing and able to provide tech support with installing or removing our 47 Ready-to-Run Web Applications, we are unable to offer support for the applications themselves and can provide only general advice on the relative merits of each.
However, one of the inclusion criteria for these programs is the viability of their own support systems. We direct you here for application-specific issues and how-to’s.
Additionally, we are unable to offer anything other than basic troubleshooting for applications you’ve written or installed yourself.
Terms of service
Our upstream provider places us under certain terms and conditions of use. Those same terms and conditions apply to you. In short, it means that you’ll be a good ’Net citizen. No porn, hacking, spamming, warez, copyright infringement or illegal activities.
We also ask that for security and anti-spam reasons you don’t create a public email service (like Hotmail) within your space and that you don’t use a version of FormMail older than version 1.92.

Cancellations

If you are dissatisfied with our service within 30 days after establishing your hosting account, you are entitled to a full refund. To cancel your account, just send us an email saying so. After we verify that it’s really you and not some imposter, we’ll cancel your account and refund your money by the same method you used to pay us.

Account suspension and cancellation
Your account will be suspended for violation of terms of service, or failure to pay your renewal invoice on time, or if you install an application that causes the server to crash. There is a suspension restoration charge equivalent to 20% of your annual hosting fee for service restoration. At our discretion, we may choose to not restore your account. Refunds are not available to accounts suspended or cancelled.
Additional Fees
Bandwidth Overage
Additional monthly transfer is billed after-the-fact at $2.00/GB/month. We do not shut-down your site when your quota is exceeded. You can always check you current disk space and traffic use, and your traffic history in the Plesk 7.5 Reloaded control panel.
Note: We measure bytes, KBs, MBs and GBs the old-fashioned way—binary squares (multiples of 1,024) not decimal squares (multiples of 1,000.) At The Secret Labs, 1GB=1,073,741,824 bytes, not 1,000,000,000 which we say is only 953.67MB.
Domain Administration
Our entire business model is geared towards providing our customers the tools (like Plesk 7.5) and knowledge (like our Flash tutorial movies) to enable you to administer your domains yourself. This is part of how we keep our annual hosting fees so low.
For those customers who would rather we administer their domain for them, we have established the following per incident fees for domain administration:
- Password changes: $5
- Email account add/modify/delete: $5
- Mailing list add/modify/delete: $5 plus $2 per address
- Subdomain or web user account add/modify/delete: $5
- Software installation
- Ready-to-run web applications: $10
- Other: $45/hour, one-hour minimum, 15 minute increments
- Domain backup to server backup repository: $15
Remember, all these things are free if you do them yourself.
Data restoration from server offsite backups
You are responsible for backing-up all your data on the server. Our daily backups are designed to restore the entire server in event of catastrophic failure.
If you don’t make your own backups and have a problem requiring that we restore data for you, we can restore data to your domain from our off-site backups, however, this is a billable service.
Downtime
Scheduled
We schedule server downtime for upgrades on an as-needed basis. Generally we schedule upgrades for Sunday mornings after our off-site weekly backups have been downloaded.
When scheduling downtime, we notify you in advance here on the web site and by email using the server’s notification system. We try to send these notifications at least two to four days in advance so you can plan accordingly. These notifications are sent to the email address in your client record on the server, (please keep it updated.)
Unscheduled
We use an outside service to monitor web and email server uptime. When that service detects that the server is down, it notifies us by an email sent to our cell phone. We will restore service as quickly as possible.
Catastrophic
In event of the loss of the server’s hard drive, the server itself, the data center where the server is located or even the city where the data center is located, our disaster recovery plan calls for a return to full service within 36 to 72 hours.
